Kancícà: An Immersive Journey from São Paulo to Nairobi

Brazil · Benin · France · South Africa · Kenya

An Immersive Work Between Memory, Spirituality and Transmission

Kancícà is an international immersive artwork written and directed by Joséphine Derobe and Laëla Adjovi.

Through a monumental visual and sonic experience, the work retraces the Atlantic crossing of Queen Na Agontimé, ruler of the Kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin), deported to Brazil in the 18th century.

The story follows Dotou, a young cartographer and vodun priestess searching for the exiled queen through memories, visible and invisible worlds, and Afro-descendant cultural legacies.

Blending contemporary creation, diasporic memory and immersive storytelling, Kancícà explores the deep connections between Africa, Brazil and Europe through a sensory experience carried by the original music of Tiganá Santana.

Presented as a fulldome immersive installation, the work offers a sensitive experience at the crossroads of contemporary art, memorial transmission and new visual narratives.

An international co-production by MansA – House of African Worlds and Dream Feel Factory, with the support of the CNC (French National Centre for Cinema and the Moving Image), Kancícà has been touring internationally since 2025 across festivals, cultural institutions and immersive venues.

Brazil, 2025 — Two Stops During the France–Brazil Season

São Paulo — International Premiere

At Festival MixBrasil, the largest festival dedicated to culture and diversity in Latin America, Kancícà became a central piece of the Mix.XR section at Centro Cultural Tendal da Lapa.

Writers and directors Laëla Adjovi and Joséphine Derobe took part in a discussion moderated by Wilfried G., exploring the creative process behind the work and the historical ties between Benin and Brazil — connections that Kancícà places at the heart of its narrative.

Rio de Janeiro — A Reclaimed Memory

From November 27 to December 9, 2025, Kancícà continued its Brazilian journey at Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR), with free public access upon reservation.

Deeply marked by the legacies of Dahomey, Rio welcomes the work as an obvious encounter. Presenting Kancícà in Brazil means closing a circle — returning to the country a part of the memory that belongs to it.

Ouidah, January 2026 — Returning to the Roots

From January 13 to 31, 2026, Kancícà returned to Benin at the Maison de la Culture de Ouidah, a city of memory and former slave-trade port that has become a major cultural transmission hub in West Africa.

Organized in partnership with the Agency for the Development of Arts and Culture (ADAC) and the French Institute of Benin, the immersive exhibition was freely accessible to the public.

Hundreds of visitors made the journey — returning to the origins of a queen and reconnecting with the roots of a long-silenced memory.

Johannesburg, April 2026 — South African Premiere

Immersive Africa  at the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome

On April 7, 2026, Kancícà was presented for the first time in South Africa at the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome at the University of the Witwatersrand, as part of Immersive Africa, an Africa–Europe initiative led by EUNIC Global (Spaces of Culture) and the Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct.

French Ambassador to South Africa David Martinon and European Union Ambassador Sandra Kramer attended the opening evening.

MansA and Dream Feel Factory spoke about the creation of the work and its international journey.

Since April 25, 2026, and until August 2026, Kancícà has been open to the public at the Wits Anglo American Digital Dome.

Nairobi, May 2026 — At the Heart of the Africa Forward Summit

On May 11, 2026, Kancícà was presented in Nairobi as part of the Africa Forward Summit, an inaugural summit co-organized by Kenya and France bringing together African heads of state, artists, entrepreneurs, institutions and members of the diaspora around a new vision of Africa–France partnerships.

That Kancícà, a work born from a displaced African memory rebuilt across continents is present at this pivotal moment for Franco-African cultural diplomacy is no coincidence. It is self-evident.
